The Indiana Hoosiers kept their early-season momentum rolling Saturday, erupting for 20 runs across two games to secure a pair of commanding victories in Greensboro, North Carolina. Indiana blew past The Charleston South Buccaneers 9-0 before overwhelming the University of North Carolina Greensboro Spartans 11-0, improving to 15-4 on the season.
Behind timely hitting, dominant pitching, and aggressive baserunning, the Hoosiers showcased the depth that has defined their first month of play.
Indiana wasted little time setting the tone in the opener against the Buccaneers, A solo home run from Alex Cooper in the first inning sparked the fire for the Hoosiers offense, and they never looked back.
The second inning proved decisive. Indiana plated three runs to build separation, highlighted by disciplined at-bats and aggressive baserunning. By the fourth inning, the Hoosiers had fully broken the game open.
Alli Gavin delivered the knockout blows, launching two home runs, her fourth and fifth of the season, including a three-run shot that capped a four-run fourth inning. Gavin finished with three RBIs and eight total bases, anchoring a lineup that produced 10 hits.
Josie Bird added a solo homer of her own, while Avery Parker and Hannah Haberstroh each drove in runs. Indiana finished 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and swiped multiple bases to keep pressure on Charleston Southern’s defense.
In the circle, Jasmine Reyes improved to 2-0 with four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Megan Gregory closed the final frame to seal the five-inning victory. The Hoosiers did not commit an error defensively and turned a double play behind crisp infield work from Aly VanBrandt, Bird and Cooper.
Charleston Southern managed only two hits and went 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position as Indiana’s pitching staff controlled the pace throughout.
Later in the afternoon, the Hoosiers looked to continue their win streak as they faced UNCG.
Locked in a scoreless duel through five innings, Indiana erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth and followed with four more in the seventh to secure the run-rule victory over UNCG.
VanBrandt delivered the game’s defining swing, a two-out grand slam in the sixth inning, clearing the bases and breaking the contest wide open. VanBrandt finished with five RBIs, two hits and two walks in a complete offensive performance.
Cassidy Kettleman added two hits and an RBI, while Cooper drove in three runs. Gavin doubled and scored, and the Hoosiers capitalized on seven walks and five hits with runners in scoring position.
In the circle, Taylor Hess was dominant. The right-hander tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing six hits over seven innings while striking out seven and walking just one. Hess improved to 4-0 on the season, navigating traffic efficiently and stranding seven UNCG runners.
Indiana’s defense backed up her effort with steady play behind the infield, surrendering just one error across the doubleheader.
