On Friday, Indiana landed its first football five-star recruit in program history.
Monshun Sales, the No. 1 rated wide receiver prospect in the 2027 class according to 247Sports, chose Indiana over an armada of historically stronger programs such as Texas, Alabama, LSU and Ohio State.
This commitment, announced on The Pat McAfee Show in the early afternoon on Friday, is more than just the addition of an elite talent. It’s a landmark moment in the history of the program that redefines its trajectory.
Sales, simply as a player, is awesome. That’s inarguable. His speed creates space, but even if there isn’t substantial space to work with, his catch radius is often undefendable.
In the short term, Sales will almost inevitably pan out as a playmaker and game changer in his time at Indiana. Sales is likely to significantly impact winning, and if Indiana wins a national championship with him on the roster, he will likely be a centerpiece of that success.
In the long term, though, this commitment could create two critical pathways for top recruits elsewhere in high school football to follow. A pipeline, and correlatedly, an avalanche.
A positional pipeline
Positional pipelines exist all across college football. Penn State, for example, is known for producing elite professional linebacker talents. Alabama frequently finds elite offensive lineman, and Ohio State harbors a constant stream of superb wide receivers. In fact, in the past five NFL Drafts, at least one Ohio State wide receiver landed on a professional roster before the end of the event’s first night.
Two of Indiana’s starting receivers last season, Omar Cooper Jr. and Elijah Sarratt, are now on NFL rosters. Cooper Jr. heard his name in the first round, and represents the first of what could become many Hoosier receivers to accept that honor in the Curt Cignetti era, emphasizing the idea that Indiana is a platform upon which receivers can catapult to professional play.
If Sales performs to expectations and stars for Indiana before vaulting into the first round of the NFL Draft, Indiana verifiably becomes a landmark destination for the top wide receiver prospects in the country to admire.
Already, Cignetti’s Indiana has sent a receiver to the first round of the NFL Draft. Now, one of if not the best wide receiver in all of high school football has chosen the Hoosiers over all other suitors.
Perhaps Sales’ decision is evidence of the instatement of a positional pipeline in Bloomington. In that case, the long-term health of Indiana’s wide receiver corp and future recruiting classes at large is in great shape.
A talent avalanche
Sales, to some degree, took a risk. To be the very first five-star football commit to a school ever, especially as a top recruit in the country with a wide range of options, is to risk misplacing one’s trust in a comparatively unproven program.
A pipeline exists between Sales’ high school football program at Lawrence North in Indianapolis and Indiana, including current Indiana wide receiver Davion Chandler and the recently drafted Cooper Jr. Indiana also just won the national championship, so for multiple reasons, Sales’ decision isn’t completely unprecedented. Even so, once one coveted prospect reveals his belief in a school, it’s more likely that others may follow.
Indiana burst onto the national radar during its national championship run, and in doing so, turned heads on the recruiting trail. Some of those recruits, particularly the cream of the crop, may possess sustained skepticism. Sales choosing the Hoosiers presents an opportunity for some of that skepticism to disappear, given that the five-star recruit with as many options as just about anyone in his class ultimately landed at Indiana.
Program redefinition
At Indiana, one can win a national championship. That much is clear after this past season’s national championship run. If the selection of Cooper Jr. and Sarratt in the NFL Draft, along with Fernando Mendoza, D’Angelo Ponds and many others is any indication, then Indiana is also a destination for top talents to set professional futures for themselves in motion.
Sales chose Indiana. That commitment may be what tips the balance towards the opening of a wide receiver pipeline and initiation of a five-star talent avalanche.
In the short term, Sales is likely to star on a successful team for multiple seasons, perhaps playing a central role in sustaining the program’s success on the field.
Past that, in the long term, this decision may turn out to be the moment Indiana verifiably became one of the destination programs of the future for wide receivers and five-star recruits at large in the state of Indiana and beyond.
