Cream and Crimson Crush: Hoosiers roll past Rutgers in dominant fashion

Indiana defeated Rutgers 12-6 to start the weekend series

Indiana wasted no time asserting control Friday evening at Andy Mohr Field, delivering an emphatic 12–2 run-rule victory over Rutgers behind an explosive offensive performance and efficient work in the circle.

The Hoosiers (20–5, 3–1 Big Ten) piled up 11 hits and scored in four different innings, overwhelming Rutgers early and never allowing the Scarlet Knights to build any momentum. Indiana’s lineup produced contributions up and down the order, with six players recording hits and seven different Hoosiers driving in runs.

Indiana struck first in the opening inning when Aly VanBrandt doubled down the left-field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Avery Parker to put the Hoosiers on the board. The offense kept the pressure on in the second inning as Hannah Haberstroh stole home, and VanBrandt added an RBI single to extend the lead.

The biggest swing of the early game came in the third. After Josie Bird and Madalyn Strader reached base, Ellie Goins launched a three-run home run to center field, pushing Indiana’s advantage to 6–0 and energizing the home crowd.

While the bats were heating up, Indiana’s pitching staff kept Rutgers quiet. Taylor Hess delivered a strong outing in the circle, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out four across 4.1 innings to earn the win. Brooke Mannon closed out the game in relief, combining with Hess to limit Rutgers to just two hits.

Rutgers briefly cut into the deficit in the fifth inning with a two-run home run from Samantha Delhoyo, but Indiana quickly answered with its most explosive frame of the night.

The Hoosiers erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the run-rule victory. Strader sparked the rally with a single, and Indiana continued to stack baserunners before VanBrandt drove in a run with another hit. Moments later, Parker delivered the knockout blow with a towering three-run homer to right-center field, extending the lead to 12–2.

VanBrandt led the Hoosiers at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Parker finished with four RBIs, while Goins added three RBIs thanks to her third-inning blast.

Following the win, Indiana head coach Stanton emphasized that success doesn’t change the team’s approach.

“You don’t try harder when things are going well,” Stanton said. “You go back to your process, the things that you do well, and you stick to the fundamentals of controlling balls.”

Indiana’s balanced attack and aggressive base running proved too much for Rutgers to handle, as the Hoosiers controlled the game from start to finish.

Indiana will return to Andy Mohr Field at 2 p.m. Saturday to continue Big Ten play against Rutgers.
