Late scoring surge powers Indiana over Minnesota to start Big Ten play with series win

Both teams broke through in the 5th inning, but the Hoosiers took control

A quiet afternoon at the plate quickly turned into an offensive burst when Indiana softball needed it most. The Hoosiers scored five runs in the fifth inning to rally past Minnesota for a 6–4 victory, combining timely hitting with solid pitching to secure the win.

Indiana finished with nine hits in the game and used a late surge to erase four scoreless innings to begin the contest.

Minnesota threatened early in the weekend behind a strong performance from pitcher Sydney Schwartz, who struck out five and held Indiana scoreless through the first four innings of the tie-breaker game Sunday afternoon. Schwartz pitched 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs while walking three.

Indiana starter Aubree Hooks kept the Hoosiers within reach early. Hooks allowed four hits and two runs while striking out three and issuing no walks. Her efficiency helped Indiana stay close until the offense found its rhythm.

The game remained scoreless through the first four innings before Minnesota broke through in the fifth. The Golden Gophers plated two runs to take a 2–0 lead, highlighted by a strong day from Maggie Werner, who went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Indiana responded immediately with its biggest offensive inning of the game. The Hoosiers exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the fifth, flipping the momentum completely.

Avery Parker helped spark the rally, finishing the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Madalyn Strader added a key swing as well, blasting a home run and driving in two runs. Alex Cooper also played a major role in the comeback, going 2-for-3 with two doubles to keep the inning alive and push runners into scoring position.

Josie Bird added another RBI during the surge as Indiana’s lineup strung together clutch hits to build a 5–2 lead.

Minnesota fought back in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to one. However, Indiana answered again with an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 6–4.

Ella Troutt came on in relief to close out the game and secure the save, shutting down Minnesota’s final opportunity in the seventh inning. Aly VanBrandt also contributed offensively for Indiana, collecting a hit from the leadoff spot, while Hannah Haberstroh added another hit to help the Hoosiers maintain pressure on Minnesota’s pitching staff.

Indiana’s balanced attack featured multiple contributors throughout the lineup, with Parker, Bird, Cooper and Strader leading the offensive charge. The Hoosiers’ combination of clutch hitting and timely pitching proved to be the difference as Indiana held Minnesota to eight hits while capitalizing on key opportunities late in the game.

Indiana improves its momentum with the win, showing resilience by turning a quiet start into a decisive late-inning rally to secure the 6–4 victory.

The Hoosiers will return to Andy Mohr Field Tuesday against Loyola Chicago at 4 p.m. EST.
