Indiana women’s soccer dropped its second Big Ten contest of the season Thursday, losing 2-1 to Maryland on the road at Ludwig Field.
After a stagnant first half, the Hoosiers (3-3-2, 0-1-1 Big Ten) opened the scoring in the 51st minute when senior midfielder Olivia Smith connected with freshman defender Grace Hamm. The rookie then lofted a shot from the right side over the Maryland goalkeeper, taking the team lead as she scored her third goal and tallied her seventh point of the season for the Hoosiers.
Maryland (4-2-3, 1-1-0 Big Ten) responded quickly as Kelsey Smith netted the equalizer in the 59th minute. The Terrapins sealed the match late, taking a 2-1 lead with a goal in the final five minutes of action.
Junior midfielder Kennedy Neighbors nearly tied it for Indiana in the closing minutes, but her shot was turned aside. Neighbors led the Hoosiers with three of their nine attempts, five of which landed on frame.
Indiana concludes its three-game road swing at Rutgers at 1 p.m. Sunday and returns home to host Washington at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25.
