Indiana parts ways with offensive coordinator Walt Bell; Rod Carey to take over

The decision came after a 44-17 loss to Maryland

Indiana has announced that it has decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Walt Bell, according to a press release on Sunday.

“I felt we need a new direction on the offensive side of the ball,” head coach Tom Allen said.

The decision comes after a 44-17 loss to Maryland.

The firing is not the result of a single game. Throughout the season fans have expressed their displeasure with the lack of success on the offensive side of the ball after too many missed opportunities and failure to open up the playbook.

Bell had been in his second season with the team after being hired in 2022. Prior to Indiana, Bell was the head coach at the University of Massachusetts, where he went 2-23 over his three years. In his time with Indiana, the team went 6-11.

Taking over for Bell is Rod Carey. Carey has been the quality control coach for the Hoosiers since 2022.

“Rod brings a wealth of experience and success along with a familiarity with our personnel,” Allen said.

Prior to Indiana, Carey was at Northern Illinois University from 2012-2018 where he went 52-30 as head coach. During that time he was named the MAC Coach of the Year in 2013. Following his stint at NIU, Carey spent two years at Temple where he went 12-20. Carey has been to seven bowl games.

Carey also took over for Indiana offensive line coach Darren Hiller after he was let go last year.
