The five names of Katie Watson, Mickie Leibacher, Becky Murphy, Sandy Arnholt and Marty Schick don’t make up the Indiana starters on most nights.
In fact, they don’t even play on the team nor have any eligibility left to do so. But on Thursday night, they were apart of the team. On ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Night’ at Assembly Hall, those five women got to accompany the Hoosiers’ starting five onto the floor.
The lineup introduction was the beginning of a special night for Indiana as they knocked off the Illinois Fighting Illini, 70-54, to win its fifth straight game.

When new assistant volleyball coach Krista Vansant pulled into Bloomington for the first time, something was different. It must be noted she has lived on the West Coast her entire life. It almost came as a shock to Vansant.
“I didn’t hit any traffic on the way here,” Vansant said. “That makes me really happy.”
For any west coaster, coming to the Midwest is a change of pace. She leaves behind her family, lifelong memories and a program at Washington where she made a name for herself. Vansant said there’s really just one thing she’ll miss.
“Not the weather in Seattle because it’s not that much better,” Vansant said. “I’ll miss being close with my family. It’s a bit more of a trek out here. Other than that, the weather isn’t that much different from Seattle, it’s just a little colder.”
Something else that’s new for Vansant is the journey she now begins in Bloomington. She arrives in Indiana after a career that saw her accomplish nearly everything there is to accomplish in collegiate volleyball. She’s stepping outside of her comfort zone.
The Redlands, California native comes to Indiana from the University of Washington where she was a two-time Honda Award winner and 2013 National Player of the Year. She recently had her No. 16 jersey retired at Washington, as well.
Then in her first international tournament, Vansant was named MVP and best outside spiker at the 2015 Pan American Cup and led Team USA a gold medal.

The Hoosiers were well in control as the time ticked down and the crowd looking to go home for the Super Bowl a few hours later.
Indiana was starting to run away. They led by 16 with just over five minutes left to play. In honor of the football game later in the day, Northwestern put together their best two-minute drill. The Wildcats broke off a 18-2 run to end regulation. Ultimately, an extra five minutes was needed.
On a day in which three Hoosiers scored 17 points or more, Indiana fended off a stingy Northwestern run to hold on for a 78-73 win.

Unfortunately for Indiana, rebounding doesn’t win basketball games.
If it did, IU would have won going away. The Hoosiers grabbed 53 rebounds to Michigan State’s 29. They were also plus-22 on the offensive glass. However, when you shoot 29 percent from the floor, it makes it tough to win any sort of basketball game.
Indiana hung around for most of the night, but didn’t make enough “winning plays” to beat Michigan State. The Spartans pulled out a 63-60 win Saturday night at Assembly Hall.
“In East Lansing they punked us,” junior Juwan Morgan said. “We came to this mindset, I know me, Freddie, Collin and Justin, we talked amongst each other and we were, like, this can't happen. Like, the guards are going to have to do what they have to do, get their 12 boards amongst them, but we need at least one or two of us to go get 10. And that's what we did.”

There’s one thing that sticks out when looking at Indiana baseball in 2018.
The experience this team brings is close to unmatched. Then when looking at the pitching staff, it really stands out. The Hoosiers used seven different starters across their weekend and weekday games last season. Out of those seven pitchers, all of them return in 2018.
Coupling a pitching staff returning all of its starters along with junior catcher Ryan Fineman, who started 45 games last season, the Hoosiers can rely on their battery experience heading into 2018.
“To me, Ryan Fineman is one of the better catchers out there,” IU manager Chris Lemonis said. “Especially in the receiving, and the umpire relationship and our kids, I think he’s one of the keys to our team. I think our pitchers will tell you that.”

A season ago the pitching was a bit of a puzzle. Jonathan Stiever burst onto the scene as a sophomore and established himself as the Friday night starter. The Saturday and Sunday starters became a bit of a roller coaster, but that worked itself out in the end.
Pauly Milto moved from the bullpen and helped to solidify the bullpen. Then there was the emergence of guys like Cal Krueger and Tim Herrin who provided solid innings.
And helping all of those guys throughout the process was Fineman. Fast-forwarding to 2018, he said sees a lot veteran leaders in that group.
“Really mature pitching staff,” Fineman said. “Even the young guys have come along really quick. Coach (Kyle) Bunn has done a great job with them and I think they’re going to do really well this year.”
Fineman is a player that any team would love to have behind the dish. He has shown he can handle a pitching staff. This season, with a group that is a year older, he will be counted on to help them be a staple of what the Hoosiers can do.
But with a bat in his hands, the Hoosiers could be looking at Fineman for improvements. A season ago he hit .239 with two home runs and 17 RBIs. Coming into 2018, he’s not only looking to improve at the plate, but in all facets of his game.
“I’d love to hit well (and) catch well,” Fineman said. “I want to be able to handle this pitching staff, the younger guys too.”

Last season the Hoosiers were a two seed in the NCAA Tournament in the Lexington Regional. They didn’t make it out of that regional, but it was still a solid season for the Hoosiers.
Now in 2018, the Hoosiers are in a spot where they can aim a bit higher. They have been seen in a few preseason rankings and have the returners to make something happen.
But for Fineman, he’s aiming high and he wants the chance to do something only a few teams can do at the end of the season.
“Personally, I just want to win,” Fineman said. “I want to win the Big Ten. I haven’t been able to dog pile, that’s something we always talk about, so that’s a main goal.”

For most of Saturday afternoon at Assembly Hall, the offense just seemed to be stuck.
IU coach Teri Moren said they could never really get in a rhythm on offense. Shots weren’t falling often for neither the Hoosiers nor the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. But when the Hoosiers needed a big bucket, senior Amanda Cahill and junior Kym Royster gave the Hoosiers a lift, combining for 28 points.
Moren said it was a complete team effort as the Hoosiers took down the Scarlet Knights, 64-58, to win their third straight game.
“Backcourt, frontcourt, it doesn’t matter,” Moren said. “It’s an overall effort with our group. It’s always collective. There’s not one kid or group that stands out more, it takes all of them.”
On a day where senior Tyra Buss broke the IU steals record and was only three-of-thirteen from the field, someone else needed to step up. The Hoosiers have relied on Buss for most of the season, and she did score 12 points, but the afternoon belonged to the frontcourt.
Royster has been one of the most improved players in the Big Ten this season. Coming into Saturday’s matchup, she had been averaging 10.7 points per game to go along with just over six boards. After two years of ups and downs, it finally seems like it’s paying off for the junior from Newark, Ohio.

There are only four more scheduled regular season home games for IU women’s basketball at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall for the rest of the 2017-2018 season.
That means just four more times to see the dynamic duo of seniors Amanda Cahill and Tyra Buss. Wednesday night was another special outing for the duo.
Behind 27 points from Buss and 22 points from Cahill, IU won its second straight conference game taking down the Wisconsin Badgers, 69-55, to kick off a four-game home stand.
“It was a great win, it’s great to be home and it’s great to have two seniors like Tyra and Amanda, who I thought showed up in a big way tonight,” Moren said. “In timely moments when it seemed like Wisconsin was making a run at us, one of those two kids came up with something big.”
At this point in their respective careers, it seems like either Buss or Cahill break a record nearly every game. On the night Buss was honored for 2,000 points, it was Cahill who was the record breaker. Late in the fourth quarter she snatched down her 1,000th career rebound.
She said she didn’t know about it until after the game. Yet, Moren was proud about her accomplishment and said she was really happy for Cahill.
“There has not been a kid that deserves any award or accolade more than B, because she has put in the time and the effort since she has been here at Indiana,” Moren said. “She has been a great pleasure to coach, and to be around her as she continues to get better. Just to be a part of what she has accomplished is really exciting, and I hope that she can share this with her teammates tonight.”

When Buss plays like she did Wednesday night and Cahill turns in an equally impressive performance, it makes things tough on opponents. Buss directs the offense, while Cahill is all over the court grabbing rebounds and scoring points.
It just seems a little more special when they both play as well as they did Wednesday night. They have the ability to play off of each other very well because they’ve done it for so long.
“Amanda and I have started together since we were freshman so we’ve played every single game with one another,” Buss said. “I feel like I’ve been playing with Amanda for years. I know it’s only been four years, but we know each other so well, we know our tendencies, we know where we’re going to be.”
Both Buss and Cahill’s careers are slowly dwindling down in Bloomington. The first part of the conference season may not have gone necessarily to plan, but they have a chance to lead the Hoosiers back in the right direction.
Moren said after the game that at this time of year, seniors see their windows closing. For Buss and Cahill, that is starting to set in. February is only a week away, but there is still a lot of basketball left.
“Everyday it gets a little lower,” Moren said. “I think the sense of urgency that seniors end up playing with at the end of the season is way different than at the beginning of their senior year. I think that’s what you’re seeing with those two.”
