Indiana Basketball's win against Nebraska in this year's (very short) Big Ten Tournament got us thinking -- thinking about our October trip to Lincoln. Back before Indiana Football secured possibly its biggest win of the century, Galen Clavio, director of the IU Sports Media program, joined Griffin Gonzalez in the Husker tailgate lots. GC throws down some BBQ knowledge and The Hoosier Network is immersed in the art of the Nebraska tailgating experience. It's the 13 minutes of BBQ glory you didn't know you needed in mid-March -- until now.

(11/16/19 8:37pm)
This week's edition of Indiana Football has come to a close with the Hoosiers picking up loss number three on the road today against the Penn State Nittany Lions and move to 7-3 on the season. Here are the biggest takeaways:
The defense kept IU in it, but it also cost them the game:
Giving up big plays continues to be a huge issue for this squad going down the stretch of the season. In a game like today when you have a one-score game the majority of the day, those major defensive errors can be what gets you a game in the loss column. The Big Ten is the best defensive conference and you cannot expect to win here unless your defense can hang with the best offenses in the conference.
The real cost of today's game came in the final quarter of play following an Indiana touchdown with a little over 10-minutes remaining. Penn State got the ball and took up over 8 minutes of time off the clock while locking in a touchdown to snag a game-winning 10-point lead. The defense has to be better. It cannot allow long drives at the end of games and expect to win in this conference.
This Offense is missing Penix, but hasn't lost hope without him:
Obviously, the offense has more explosiveness with Penix under center but All the credit in the world needs to be given to Peyton Ramsey for keeping the Hoosiers in this one today. He controlled the offense in the way a Big Ten starting quarterback should, and I think he is the reason this game was as close as it was.
The offense lost the top target, Whop Philyor, early in this one and while it did hurt the Hoosiers chances in this one, it didn't quite cost the Hoosiers the game. The biggest takeaway here is that the Indiana offense is not having to piggyback off the defense's big plays as the Hoosiers can continue to make plays to keep them in ball games.
Indiana Football is still building, but they aren't done yet
Listen this is not your same old Indiana football team. For years it seemed as if Indiana was the little brother of the Big Ten. The Hoosiers were big enough to fight but never quite big enough to win. Except for this year. The fight seems even now. It's almost as if the little brother of the Big Ten finally hit the growth spurt and is starting to compete with the likenesses of Penn State.
There was no give up in this group today. There were times where it made sense for this Indiana team to give up and call it a day like they may have just a year ago but not today. To quote Tom Allen, this group certainly "fought and fought and fought" today. I fully believe everyone needs to understand that this team is different and that is why they can compete with these high-level teams now. Enjoy the process now, because we are closer today to that breakthrough than we have been in a very long time.

Happy to be in Happy Valley for Today's Big Ten East showdown between Indiana and Penn State. At the half, Indiana trails Penn State 20-14. Let's break this one down:
Mistakes will kill you in the Big Ten
The game opened up with Indiana receiving a punt following a forced three-and-out. The punt was muffed by Whop Philyor, and Penn State would take over and get a score to start the ballgame with a 7-0 lead. Later on, in the first quarter, a pass interference call on Juwan Burgess would lead to a 41-yard completion on the very next play for the Nittany lions. Listen, I know it is extremely cliche but those kinds of mistakes kill you in games, especially in this conference.
They kill you because those are the kind of opportunities a top team in the nation like Penn State won't give back to you. They will take what you give them and try and capitalize on you in a matter of plays after the fact. Bottom line: you have top limit mistakes. Especially on the road. Especially against Penn State.
The defense needs to find more confidence
I could write a book about Indiana's defensive effort today. The simplest way to sum it up: it was either very good or very bad. This Indiana defense has shown growth all season long. It is almost hard to believe that this is the same unit we saw in week one against Ball State. The defense has forced two turnovers today and has challenged Penn State's offense is a way we really haven't seen a lot of teams do to it this season.
However, the defense isn't flawless. Penalties on third downs and big plays have been given up at crucial moments. A 38-yard touchdown by Sean Clifford on a scramble cost the Hoosiers the lead early as they continue to try and gain it back. Simply said, this defense needs to have the confidence to ride the highs and the lows that come along with playing in the Big Ten conference. A lot of that comes with age, but much of it comes with discipline in games like today.
Give Stevie Scott the ball and get out of the way
Scott over the past few weeks has been an absolute beast. His last outing was so impressive, it earned him Big Ten offensive player of the week honors. Now usually, when Ramsey is Indiana's starter, Scott will get even more carries however today that has not been the case. At the half, Scott has recorded 8 carries for 38 yards. Sabermetric stat of the day: you can't rush for a lot of yards if you don't have a ton of carries. I fully expect Scott to be used more in the second as the Hoosiers try and capitalize on the fatigue of Penn State's defense.
Something to note: It isn't just Scott's strength that makes him such a strong back for Indiana: it is his IQ. Watch the end of his runs in the second half. Scott rolls while being tackled. But what seems like an awkward rotation for the 6'2, 231-pound sophomore usually means an extra yard or two at the end of a play. Something to watch in the second is how the Scott workload is increased to help the Hoosiers regain momentum in this one.

This week, Matt Cohen and Griffin Gonzalez recap the Nebraska game as well as what to expect in the coming weeks now that Indiana is bowl-bound.
(10/26/19 11:18pm)
LINCOLN — We have gone final in Lincoln as Indiana takes down Nebraska by a final score of 38-31 and the Hoosiers are going bowling.
Let's break it down:
Ramsey gets it done
My respect for Peyton Ramsey has gone through the roof because of his performance here today. He was 25-for-36 for 323 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. For a guy who has faced the critics week in and week out, Ramsey let his play this week speak for itself.
Obviously this team will want Michael Penix back as soon as possible as the offense just flows better with him at the helm. But Indiana can find peace of mind knowing Ramsey can still compete in the Big Ten.
Defense still searching for consistency
This area has been so hit-and-miss this season. Yes, they have come up big when it has mattered, but they have put themselves in a position where the defense HAD to make the game-changing play in order to win.
Whether it was the two takeaways at the end of Maryland today or the stops, and lack thereof, today against Nebraska, this is a unit that flat out needs to perform better for the full 60 minutes of play.
'Grit' defines this team
Yes. The Indiana football word of the year but also the perfect word to describe this Indiana football team the past two weeks. Both games have had adversity and things to overcome but both times the Hoosiers overcame.
This team has played with a chip on its shoulder. The Hoosiers play as if they are sick of being the underdog. This is an Indiana team that has played all season with heart and determination. Bottom line: this team is gritty and that is why.
Bottom line:
The line of the week has been 'This is not your grandpa's Nebraska team.' Well I'm going to change that up a bit. Indiana has six wins before November. 'This is not you grandpa's Indiana football team.'
(10/26/19 9:25pm)
LINCOLN — Here we are in Nebraska, where the Hoosiers are looking to become bowl eligible by earning win No. 6 against the Cornhuskers. At the half, The Hoosiers trail the Huskers 21-16.
Here are the takeaways:
The defense has to play each drive with more aggression
Yes, the fumble recovery is a great stat to add to the first half total, but other than that, the defense has given up too much to a backup quarterback and the backup's backup for the Huskers. Nebraska had an extremely hot start to the day accumulating 140-plus yards, two touchdowns, all in less than 12 plays. In total, Nebraska totaled 313 yards of total offense. Not great for Indiana
In order to compete in this conference you have to be able to play tough, unrelenting and unforgiving defense for 60-minutes. You cannot give up big plays and major gains, especially in the opening minutes.
Timely penalties
They are killer. They cost Indiana over 100 yards last week and you cannot possibly beat Nebraska on the road when penalties continue to be an ongoing issue. Indiana tallied two flags for 29 yards in the first half. However, while the sheer number of penalties isn't killing the Hoosiers, it is when the penalties are committed that continue to take Indiana out of games.
Early in the second quarter, Nebraska was facing a third-and-17 around its own 40-yard line. On the third down play, Nebraska elected to attempt an outside run that was pushed out of bounds for a 1-yard loss. The problem? Indiana defensive lineman Alfred Bryant was called for a facemask penalty giving Nebraska the automatic first down. While the Huskers did not score, it still offered enough momentum to further the drive down the field.
