The Hoosier Network · Indiana Football Podcast: Recapping Michigan State
This week on the podcast, the boys explain how Indiana was able to win big on the road and still not be satisfied. Also, the guys do a deep dive into who Tom Allen is away from football.
(11/14/20 9:13pm)
Welcome to East Lansing in 2020. The Indiana Hoosiers have just shut down a Big Ten opponent on the road and fans are still not satisfied.
Let's break down how Indiana was able to win this one:
Defense:
Whenever you shut out an opponent obviously defense is going to be the first key we will point out. Defensively, the Hoosiers were on it from the get-go.
The defensive line was able to make Rocky Lombardi uncomfortable which ultimately lead to two first-half interceptions for Tiawan Mullen and a quarterback change for the Spartans.
The ability of this defense to constantly get stops and force team's to change their gameplan have been huge already this season and will be huge the rest of the way.
Ty Fryfogle:
My goodness.
The offense started off sloppy and had major concerns early as the Hoosier offense was unable to drive the ball down the field. Then, Ty Fry happened.
Eleven catches on 14 targets, 200 yards and two touchdowns. Ty Fryfogle was able to provide Indiana with the offensive momentum needed to get this offense going.
Run Game and Offensive Consistency:
As usual, we have to close our rapid reaction with an area where we believe Indiana needs to improve drastically before next week's matchup against Ohio State.
Indiana's offensive consistency has plagued the team all season and while it has not cost them in the win column, eventually it could drag them down.
Indiana needs to be able to drive the ball down the field and be able to score at will if they truly want to earn that Top-10 team honor.
The run game down the middle was nearly non-existent Saturday and Indiana had to grind out every single yard it could get on the ground. The solution lies in the offensive line (who was short two starters Saturday) who must get more push upfront and be able to win at the line of scrimmage on a majority of plays.
If Indiana can create an offensive system that builds on the momentum and extend on long-lasting drives, this easily could become one of the most dangerous teams in the country.
In a Big Ten only schedule, any win is a great win. That should be the mood around Indiana fans after Saturday's matchup. But this year you feel that this team has a little more in it. This team has the ability to compete with the best therefore they have the ability to be critiqued like the best.
A 24-0 win on the road is always great but leaving points on the board in the second half won't work against better teams and in closer matchups down the way for Indiana. The coming weeks will bring some of Tom Allen's biggest coaching challenges yet and it should be fun to watch.

How the heck did we get here?
Since last year's Big Ten Championship, our world has seen a pandemic, murder hornets, a tiger king, a constant flow of memes surrounding the Nebraska Cornhuskers and a whole lot more.
Bottom line: Big Ten football is back and so are our power rankings.
Let's take a look:
14. Rutgers (0-0)
This Week: @ Michigan State (Saturday, Noon on BTN)
A conference-only schedule is going to be rough on everyone, but it will be absolutely killer on the Scarlett Knights. They may win one game this season (if they are lucky).
13. Maryland (0-0)
This Week: @ Northwestern (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. on BTN)
The Taulia Tagovailoa hype will not be tolerated in this week's power rankings. Yes, head coach Mike Locksley has proven he can provide the Big Ten with some offensive firepower, but the defensive liability that the Terrapins carry is just too much to bear.
12. Northwestern (0-0)
This Week: vs. Maryland (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. on BTN)
Northwestern may be my sleeper team of the year; injuries were absolutely killer in their 2019 campaign.
But with the new quarterback transfer from Indiana, Peyton Ramsey, the Wildcats look to improve their passing efficiency, which ranked worst in the nation in 2019.
11. Nebraska (0-0)
This Week: @ No. 5 Ohio State (Saturday, Noon on FOX)
Okay, Nebraska, you cannot threaten a possible exit of the Big Ten and expect not to be punished.
Are the cornhuskers bad? Absolutely not. They actually may be better than they were last year. But their first few games are absolute killers and will absolutely kill any momentum they had. Might as well become a Big Ten East team at this point.
10. Michigan State
This Week: vs. Rutgers (Saturday, Noon on BTN)
New year. New Coach. It is going to take some getting used to. Don't expect too much out of Sparty in 2020.
That being said, a week one matchup against Rutgers may just be the good luck Mel Tucker needs in week one.
9. Purdue (0-0)
This Week: vs. Iowa (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. on BTN)
Jeff Brohm fanatics like to claim every year is 'THE year' for Purdue. But here is my question:
What the heck has Purdue done differently?
They have below-average quarterbacks. A below-average defense. They have great skill players, but is that really enough to get you to ten, hell, even eight wins? I dont think so.
Purdue — better than some, worse than most in 2020.
8. Illinois (0-0)
This Week: @ No. 14 Wisconsin (Friday, 8 p.m. on BTN)
Okay, remember when Northwestern was really good out of nowhere about two years ago? Call me crazy, that is Illinois this year.
We saw super bright spots at the end of last year with Lovie Smith's squad, and I think we will see more of the same in 2020.
7. Indiana (0-0)
This Week: vs. No. 8 Penn State (3:30 on FS1)
It is truly make-or-break time for Tom Allen's Indiana Hoosiers, claiming earlier this week in a press conference that losing close to a top-25 team is no longer acceptable.
The program has grown leaps and strides over the past few years, but this season will tell us a lot about Tom Allen's progress at Indiana and what the future will hold for the Hoosiers.
6. Michigan (0-0)
This Week: @ No. 21 Minnesota (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. on ABC)
Where do I begin on Michigan? Since his arrival in Ann Arbor, head coach Jim Harbaugh has underperformed and left Michigan fans constantly wanting more.
This season may become his most criticized yet. In a year where the Wolverines lack talent — and there is no such thing as an easy schedule — it will be hard for the blue and maize to win more than six games.
A big win over Minnesota on the road would send a big message to begin the season.
5. Wisconsin (0-0)
This Week: vs. Illinois (Friday, 8 p.m. on BTN)
A new year in Wisconsin, but this year the Badgers are without a star, NFL-ready running back.
The question for Wisconsin this season is finding a way to reload talent in a nine-game, Big Ten-only schedule. If they can do that, they will certainly move their way up the rankings.
4. Minnesota (0-0)
This Week: vs. No. 18 Michigan (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. on ABC)
I was so close to giving Michigan this spot, but I just couldn't do it. Minnesota was truly elite last season, and P.J. Fleck may be the fan-favorite coach in the Big Ten.
The Gophers return so much NFL talent that this roster looks ready to win now. Don't be surprised if they run away with the Big Ten West.
3. Iowa (0-0)
This Week: @ Purdue (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. on BTN)
Whoa! Iowa above Michigan and Wisconsin?! Can you believe it?!
It is really only because there was so much turnover this year in the Big Ten and the difference between Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota really looks to be razor thin this year.
Iowa takes the third spot this week, but a close win or a loss to Purdue could quickly change that.
2. Penn State (0-0)
This Week: @ Indiana (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. on FS1)
The Nittany Lions are looking to be one of the strongest teams that James Franklin has had during his tenure in Happy Valley.
However, with star running back Journey Brown likely out for the entire 2020 campaign, the question now becomes who is the stand out player for this year's squad?
Indiana isn't the biggest of competition for week one, but if the Nittany Lions are caught sleeping, it could be a long opening day for James Franklin.
1. Ohio State (0-0)
This Week: vs. Nebraska (Saturday, Noon on FOX)
Justin Fields. Ryan Day. Ohio State.
That is all.
So, there you have it. The Big Ten is officially back and this season is sure to bring a lot of excitement. A conference-only schedule is going to be difficult on everyone from the top to bottom of the conference.
While we don't know exactly what will happen or what this season will look like, one thing is for sure: this is going to be fun.

The Hoosier Network · Indiana Football Podcast: Defensive Preview
This week on the pod Grif, Jack, and Grif break down the defensive depth chart for the 2020 IUFB season and what to expect from Tiawan Mullen and the rest of Tom Allen's squad.
(09/21/20 9:18pm)
The Big Ten is officially back. No, not like last time. This third schedule release is much more promising than the previous two, as the conference announced its return with a nine-game schedule that begins the weekend of Oct. 23. In case you missed it, the schedule includes eight games and one additional game in which the Hoosiers will face off against a team that finished similarly in the West division.
Tom Allen's squad has a tough eight weeks ahead. That might be putting it softly. Why don't we break it down?
Week 1: Penn State
Well...it isn't Ball State. Obviously playing exclusively conference opponents is going to have its downsides, and opening your season against Penn State is one of them. The Nittany Lions are bringing back much of last year's talent and will be looking to keep pace in the East right behind Ohio State.
But it isn't all bad for the Hoosiers. Last year's matchup against the Nittany Lions ended in a close contest that saw IU give it up late. That battle may provide enough motivation for the Hoosiers to secure a week one upset.
Week 2: at Rutgers
Of course the Hoosiers play Rutgers on Halloween. In Piscataway. I'd be upset if they didn't.
I actually love Scarlet Knights new head coach Greg Schiano, and I really think Rutgers will slowly begin hitting an upswing of things. But Rutgers is still Rutgers and this is probably the only team in the Big Ten that would've benefitted from a year off.
The rebuild is on and it will show in week two. IU — and everyone else — should win big in New Jersey.
Week 3: Michigan
Michigan is always one of those matchups that can go one of two ways: either IU holds it close and loses a tight one late in an absolute dog fight, or... Michigan dominates the entire game.
Last year we saw the latter of the two and we could be in for another episode this year. Not all hope is lost for IU, though. Earlier this week, Michigan quarterback Dylan McCaffrey chose to opt out of the 2020 season, leaving the Wolverines' quarterback situation murky at best. IU may get lucky and sneak an upset in week three.
Week 4: at Michigan State
The Hoosiers head back to East Lansing for a second straight year — a byproduct of pandemic scheduling. Not unlike the opportunity that presented itself to IU a year ago, this game could be the most important win of the 2020 IU football season.
Usually, with a non-conference schedule included, a team like IU can afford to drop a game or two in conference that should have been won, like last season against the Spartans. However, with a shortened schedule and no UConn or Western Kentucky, there's even less room for error.
Michigan State's program is in the middle of mass turnover with new head coach Mel Tucker getting his feet underneath him. Indiana simply must take advantage of a beaten-down Sparty if there remain aspirations of getting back to a bowl game this winter. Yes, as wild as this has been, bowl games are still a thing.
Week 5: at Ohio State
I mean, what do you want me to say? It seems to me — and hopefully you — that Ohio State is head and shoulders above everyone else in the Big Ten, and no one can ignore that.
Ohio State, Clemson, and Alabama are truly in a league of their own and should be respected as such.
No fans cheering against the Hoosiers should help? Maybe? But it probably won't give Indiana the upset in this matchup.
Week 6: Maryland
Mike Locksley begins his second year in College Park after an underwhelming first season. I really like Maryland as far as rebuilding teams go, but the Terps really aren't there yet. I expect their offense to be really explosive but massive holes in the defense will plague them, similarly to how they did last season.
https://www.thehoosiernetwork.com/2020/09/19/indiana-football-podcast-the-new-new-schedule-release/
Last year's win for Indiana at Capital One Field signaled a major turning point in IU's journey back to bowl season. This year? In Bloomington? Should be a solid Hoosiers' victory.
Week 7: at Wisconsin
Madison. December. Man, the Big Ten really isn't really giving IU a break this year, huh?
This could be a pretty exciting matchup here. Don't get me wrong, I think Wisconsin is crazy good. But the Badgers did lose a ton of talent this past offseason to graduation and the draft, and this could be a team full of new faces with little Big Ten game experience.
That being said, I expect a solid Wisconsin team this year. Not as good as last year but still really solid. It will be extremely tough for the Hoosiers to walk away victors in Madison.
Week 8: Purdue
Last year's Bucket Game was one of the best we have ever seen, and one can only imagine what this year could look like.
The biggest issue with finishing the season with a rivalry game is that rarely both teams are at 100%. With the youth on both these rosters, I wouldn't get my hopes up for a healthy matchup in Week 8.
Purdue may have better individual players, but I fully believe Indiana is the better team. The Hoosiers should walk away with their second-straight Bucket win.
The regular Big Ten season will conclude with a Week 9 matchup that includes the Big Ten championship and cross-division matchups for every Big Ten team's divisional counterpart. For a team like Indiana, a bowl game opportunity could come down to that final game.
In a year where each day seems to bring more bad, we can finally focus on a common good: Big Ten football is back.
The Hoosiers are showing one of their strongest rosters in recent history and are looking to build off the momentum from the 2019 season.
Will Indiana be able to compete in a Big Ten-only season? Will the Hoosiers finally get that program-changing upset? Can Indiana finally have that great year fans have been waiting for?
All of those questions and more should be answered in the weeks to come.
