Bob Knight pumped his fist and yelled “Defense!” You couldn’t take the smile off his face if you tried. He hugged, smiled and joked with former players and even went over to the ESPN table and wrestled with Dick Vitale.
This was a moment that most thought they would never see. More than 19 years after his firing in September 2000, the winningest coach in Indiana history was back.
“This was a great day for me,” former Hoosier Randy Wittman said. “This was one of the best highs I’ve had in a long time.”
In 2017, Knight appeared on the Dan Patrick Show, where Patrick prodded at Knight, asking if he would ever come back to Bloomington. Knight was appreciative of the fans and said he would never forget how great the Indiana fans were.
It was a different tone for the administration. Knight was fired amidst allegations in 2000, and it was not a well-received break-up. He has had hatred toward Indiana University ever since.
“As far as the hierarchy at Indiana University at that time, I have absolutely no respect whatsoever for those people,” Knight said in that 2017 interview with Patrick. “With that in mind, I have absolutely no interest in ever going back to that university.”
That changed last spring when Knight showed up at a baseball game. He also moved back to Bloomington, and according to Wittman, he’s as happy as ever to be back. The final step was to return to Assembly Hall.
Everyone is focused on the "why." Why did Bob Knight choose now to return? Why didn’t he come back for any other team reunion?
“I’d like to not focus on the whys, but he’s here.” Wittman said.
The fact that a man who made public comments just three years ago wishing the Indiana administration dead returned is historic. This will forever be a “where were you when,” moment.
Knight won 902 games in his career, 662 at Indiana. His teams won 11 Big Ten regular season championships and most importantly, three national championships.
He had all that success with his own unique way of coaching, a way that focused on player development and defense. His emphasis on player development may not work well in 2020, but his emphasis on defensive toughness will never grow old. He returned to the locker room today to give Indiana a pregame speech.
“I was standing there, and he was Coach Knight again,” Wittman said. “It was like he hasn’t left that locker room.”
Indiana may have lost to Purdue again, 74-62. Indiana may not have any wins over Purdue in the last three seasons, but that doesn’t come close to the nearly 20-year absence of Knight from Assembly Hall.
Vitale has clamored for years to get him back to Bloomington. On several occasions, rumor had it he would return. And then he didn’t. That continued for years until last night, when Vitale hinted at the return on social media, and several organizations such as Bleacher Report and Sports Illustrated jumped on it, breaking the news that Knight would return against Purdue.
Indiana has had this hung over its head for years. One of the best coaches in college basketball history never wanted to return to his former school. This appearance Saturday was a the metaphorical “monkey off the back” of Indiana University athletics.
“I said, ‘You’re back here for a reason because this is where you belong,’” Wittman said in a phone call to Knight. “You need to come back with us.”
He followed through, not necessarily for the Indiana administration, but for his former players and for the fans. Indiana honored the 1980 Big Ten championship team as well as Hoosiers from both the 1970s and ‘80s, players such as Isiah Thomas and Mike Woodson. At the end of the ceremony, Knight was surrounded by former players with a huge smile on his face.
And the fans? He went up to the student section, fists pumping in the air, and he yelled, “Defense! Defense!”
Why did Knight come back now? Indiana basketball is in one of its longest periods of struggle. The Hoosiers haven’t been to the tournament in three years and haven’t been past the Sweet 16 since 2002.
That doesn’t matter. Appreciate the fact that a legendary figure in Indiana athletics history was back in the building he called home for nearly 30 years. Appreciate the fact that even after almost 20 years, the fans, young and old, welcomed him back with open arms. And appreciate that he welcomed their love with open arms too.
Now that he’s been back once, will he be back again?
“That’s up to him,” Wittman said. “I wouldn’t be surprised.
“I hope so,” Mike Woodson said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Rebound after rebound bounced off of a number of Hoosiers’ hands and back to Ohio State. Every time Indiana made any sort of small run, the Buckeyes grabbed an offensive rebound or knocked down a three, leading to a 68-59 win Saturday afternoon.
As all of these rebounds got away from Indiana, sophomore point guard Rob Phinisee looked frustrated. At times he looked irritated. He was doing his part offensively, but his teammates couldn’t get rebounds.
Wednesday night was not a good night for anyone in the backcourt. Phinisee himself was 0-for-6 and did not score in Indiana’s 64-49 loss at Penn State. Saturday was different. Phinisee knocked down an early three, as well as another one in the first minutes of the second half. He scored 11 points and added three assists.
Even with a solid game from its point guard, Indiana looked lost, and Phinisee looked frustrated. Archie Miller has always talked about how rebounding needs to travel and how IU has to be the more physical team. Indiana was outrebounded by seven, more specifically by seven on the offensive glass, leading to eight second-chance points for Ohio State.
“The physicality of our team has taken a real drop,” Miller said. “Our interior defense, offense, ability on the glass, those things have to be intact for us to be successful and they’re not right now.”
So where do you turn when rebounding no longer travels? What about when your frontcourt isn’t winning the battle down low?
It starts at the top with a point guard who has a command of the offense. Whether his frustration is a good thing or a bad thing isn’t important. It’s the fact that Phinisee is showing emotion, something this team has lacked a lot on the road. It’s something that Miller is still searching for.
“You look for emotion, you look for anything to get your players stirred up,” Miller said.
After the game, Phinisee pinned a lot of the poor defense on him. Ohio State dominated with its inside-out approach, working either through Kaleb Wesson or through drive-and-kicks. The Buckeyes tallied 19 assists, including four from Wesson.
“I feel like it’s on me,” Phinisee said. “I gotta guard the ball a little bit better.”
Phinisee wasn’t the only player who played well offensively. Devonte Green had a team-high 13 points and Jerome Hunter knocked down two more threes in route to a nine-point outing. However, the quiet frontcourt is an issue Indiana has been unable to overcome.
Indiana hasn’t attempted more than 20 free throws in a game since Jan. 11. That’s the same Indiana team that at one point in mid-January led the nation with over 26 free-throw attempts per game. That average is slowly declining, taking only 28 in the past two games combined. Miller said after the Penn State loss he “has no idea” what is leading to the decline in attempts.
The backcourt has been the hotspot for scrutiny throughout this season. The inconsistency of Green and Al Durham drives fans crazy and the lack of leadership at the point from Phinisee has led to plenty of frustration. On Saturday, we saw frustration from Phinisee himself.
Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe it’s just a point guard being frustrated with his bigs for not grabbing the rebound. Or maybe the body language Phinisee showed in Saturday’s loss is a sophomore realizing it’s time for him to step up as more of a vocal leader. Miller said he’s not worried about poor body language from his point guard. With the co-captains so inconsistent at times, maybe it’s time for Phinisee to be that leader this team desperately needs, especially on the road.
“To me, in situations like this, you know the players, they need to hear each other more than they need to hear me,” Miller said.
There’s no quick fix. Miller said Indiana’s season has hit a “pothole.” But amidst another lackluster performance on the road, a fire was lit in Indiana’s starting point guard. Heading into a much-needed week off, maybe he can take that frustration from this road loss and turn it into leadership the Hoosiers desperately need from their point guard.

(01/24/20 5:15am)
There’s still 90 minutes until tipoff. Fans are just settling into their seats. A few Hoosiers are out early to warmup, led by Joey Brunk. This isn’t unusual. Brunk is almost always one of the first Hoosiers on the court, getting extra work whenever he can. The crowd’s reaction was new.
Brunk went up and under on one of the team managers.
“There we go, Mr. Fundamental,” someone yelled from the crowd.
Brunk shows off a nice spin move and finish.
“Keep workin’ Joey,” someone else yelled.
Brunk fits right in in Bloomington.
It took a while. Brunk started the season as a grad transfer who was still getting acclimated with the offense, struggling to make his voice heard in an explosive Indiana offense. At Butler, he was a role player, playing 10-15 minutes off the bench to spell the starters or to relieve foul trouble. His role changed quickly at Indiana, and he had his biggest moment of the season Thursday night against Michigan State.
With exactly one minute left, Rob Phinisee threw up a prayer. With just two seconds on the shot clock, Brunk corralled the rebound, twisted his body and kissed it off the glass and in to put Indiana up 65-62. Brunk finished with 14 points and six rebounds in the Hoosiers’ 67-63 win over No. 11 Michigan State.
“Joey’s second shot late in the game,” Archie Miller said. “Big of a play as you’re going to make.”
There were questions in the preseason about whether Brunk would get the starting job right away or if he would play behind De’Ron Davis for a little while. Fans knew he was from Butler, but most people didn’t know much about Brunk or the way he plays the game of basketball. Now he’s a fan favorite, and the player Miller has been searching for the past three years.
Juwan Morgan was that guy the past two seasons, but he was recruited by Tom Crean. No, Brunk wasn’t initially recruited by Miller, but after he decided to transfer, that was Miller’s opportunity to recruit Brunk, the player he needed in his offense.
It’s not just his numbers on the court. It’s his leadership, his toughness, his gritty attitude. There’s a lot of Butler in Brunk, but there’s even more Indiana in him.
“It’s not measurable what Joe has meant to us,” Miller said. “His everyday approach is something as a coach, you marvel at the work ethic and there’s no fake work ethic.”
