MINNEAPOLIS -- Indiana entered its first Big Ten Tournament matchup against Penn State shorthanded, as senior captain Trey Galloway missed his first game of the season with a lower leg injury he suffered against Michigan State on Sunday. Xavier Johnson returned to the starting lineup in his absence.

With 14 seconds left in Sunday’s game, Michigan State trailed by one and had a chance to spoil Indiana’s Senior Day festivities. MSU’s Tyson Walker, who finished with 30 points, drove toward the basket and watched his shot roll off the left side of the rim. After two tips, Xavier Johnson grabbed the rebound and raced down the length of the court dribbling out the clock, with the Assembly Hall crowd drowning out the sound of the buzzer.

Indiana entered its last road game of the season with a two-game win streak and lots of momentum against Minnesota on Wednesday night. The Golden Gophers had won their last five games in a row at home, but that didn’t stop the Hoosiers from cruising to a 70-58 victory in Williams Arena.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – Heading into Saturday night’s rivalry game in Mackey Arena, Indiana’s focus was on staying out of foul trouble and controlling the rebounding battle. Very little went according to plan for the Hoosiers, en route to a 79-59 defeat to the No. 2 Purdue Boilermakers, getting swept in the season series by 20 or more points for the first time in 90 years.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Indiana entered halftime with its largest deficit throughout the first 20 minutes, trailing Ohio State 42-29. Coming off one of their worst losses of the season and facing a team ranked 120th defensively in Kenpom, the Hoosiers’ opportunity for a bounce back win was looking bleaker by the minute.

With 2:12 remaining in the second half against Iowa on Tuesday night, Indiana trailed by two and point guard Xavier Johnson took the ball the length of the court, rising for a thunderous dunk to tie the game. Iowa’s Ladji Dembele met Johnson mid-air and fouled him, sending Johnson crashing to the ground. He landed on his left arm with all of his body weight. Johnson grabbed his arm, immediately screaming in pain, and Assembly Hall fell silent.

With 54 seconds remaining in the second half, Xavier Johnson stepped to the line to shoot two free throws with a chance to tie the game against No. 10 Illinois. Despite a terrific performance, neither free throw went down, and the Fighting Illini converted on the other end extending their lead to four. Illinois held on to win 70-62 in State Farm Center Saturday afternoon, increasing Indiana’s losing streak to three.

With just under 13 minutes remaining Thursday, Trey Galloway drove down the lane with his eyes focused on the basket, gathered the ball to put up a floater from inside the paint, and pushed it to the left of the rim at the last second where a flying Kel’el Ware came in for the slam. It was their third alley-oop connection of the second half and gave the Hoosiers a 19-point lead.

Head coach Mike Woodson has emphasized the next man up mentality since the beginning of the year and that was on full display Friday night against Maryland, as the Hoosiers defeated the Terrapins 65-53 at Assembly Hall.

NEW YORK – With just over four minutes left in round two of the Empire Classic, the Indiana Hoosiers trailed the Louisville Cardinals 64-61. Head coach Mike Woodson knew he needed to make a change, and instead of changing a player, he changed his defensive scheme. Indiana abandoned its man-to-man defense and switched to a zone, a move that caused Louisville to score just one basket with only four seconds remaining.

With just over 10 minutes left to play Tuesday night, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles held a six-point lead over Indiana after going on a 8-0 run. The Hoosiers called timeout and needed a quick response in order to not let their first game of the season slip away. That’s when five-star sophomore forward Malik Reneau took charge.

CJ Gunn did not get the start, but his presence off the bench helped keep the Hoosiers from a disastrous first half in their first exhibition game of the season, as Indiana beat the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds 74-52 Sunday afternoon. Gunn shot 3-for-6 with seven points in 10 minutes of first-half action, while also causing a few Greyhound turnovers to keep the halftime deficit to only two (27-25 UIndy).
