For 70 laps, it didn’t look like anyone was going to catch up to Ski Cycling, which had a half-lap lead over the rest of the field at one point.
Then, fatigue hit.
Delta Gamma, Teter Cycling and Alpha Chi Omega started to creep up on Ski little-by-little, until Delta Gamma finally overtook first place.
By the time the white flag was waved for the final lap, it was a three-team race to the finish line between Ski, Delta Gamma and Teter. Ski slowly faded as the three teams approached the third turn. Then Delta Gamma and Teter ended up being separated by one final push from senior rider Lauren Britt to ultimately give Teter its first Women’s Little 500 win since 2011.

MEXICO CITY -- IU freshman defender Jack Maher is getting more comfortable as a leader.
The center back who started every match of the 2018 season is the lone returning starter from last year’s roster, and he’s making sure Indiana’s current squad doesn’t have any growing pains.
He, along with senior transfer Simon Waever, junior Jordan Kleyn, and freshman Daniel Munie have started in defense for both of Indiana’s matches in Mexico. The quartet, along with goalkeepers Sean Caulfield and Bryant Pratt have two clean sheets in two matches against talented Mexican youth teams, including a 1-0 win over UNAM University on Thursday.
Maher lies in the heart of that back line at center back. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year was a mostly quiet player alongside Timmy Mehl in 2018, but this spring Maher wants to be more vocal and lead by example.
“We have a team full of leaders, but for me especially, I feel really comfortable,” Maher said. “Whenever it’s time for me to step up and have my role, I’ll be able to do that.”
The Hoosiers leaned on the back line against UNAM, a team that had most of the possession. It’s something Indiana is not used to. Against NCAA opponents, the Hoosiers like to dominate possession and control the match, but in both games in Mexico, the roles were flipped. Indiana has been the one waiting patiently for its opportunities because both of its opponents controlled most of the possession.
UNAM came out in the match aggressive, taking multiple shots at goal within the first 15 minutes. It wasn’t until the 40th minute where IU got its first significant chance of the match, and it took advantage of it.
Freshman attacker Ryan Wittenbrink played sophomore Ian Black through on goal, and the latter was able to round the keeper and slot the only goal of the match into the bottom corner of the net.
(03/13/19 6:24am)
Nearing the 75th minute, sophomore midfielder AJ Palazzolo bent over and tried to catch his breath.
He had played nearly every minute of the match up to that point, and when IU assistant coach Danny O’Rourke asked if he was still able to play, Palazzolo stood tall and gave a thumbs up. In the days leading up to Indiana’s match against the Cruz Azul U-20s, Palazzolo, along with some of his teammates, weren’t feeling great due to the altitude change in Mexico City and fatigue.
There were days of training where multiple players were absent due to either sickness or injury. Even though the team wasn’t at 100 percent Tuesday afternoon, the Hoosiers still came away with a 1-0 victory over “La Maquina”.
Indiana showed its ability to find different ways to win in an environment it wasn’t used to.
“We have a lot of elements right now,” IU head coach Todd Yeagley said. “We have the heat, the altitude, and we have guys that are not feeling well. AJ had all three, and we had guys who didn’t train or leave the hotel yesterday. To find a result, and the grittiness that showed, that’s a great team-building moment.”
Late into the second half, Simon Waever made a run into the box and was taken down by a Cruz Azul defender, earning a penalty kick in what was one of few chances for either side. Sophomore attacker Ian Black stepped up to the spot, and delivered a low shot into the right-hand corner of the goal, beating the keeper. Black’s goal would be the difference, and the Hoosiers left the Cruz Azul victory with a sick and banged up squad.
Freshman midfielder Joe Schmidt is one of the more experienced players on this year’s team. Playing in the central attacking midfield position throughout the match, Schmidt was one of many vocal leaders in the middle of the pitch. He, along with Palazzolo, were the ones that the game was flowing through.

“I feel like AJ dominated the midfield,” Schmidt said. “His communication with me was great — just being able to have him behind me is a huge confidence booste because he’s going to clean a lot of stuff up.”
With a young squad, experienced players are relied on even more than usual. Captain and senior goalkeeper Sean Caulfield helped keep the Hoosiers’ shape from the back, and he made a few crucial saves to help keep his clean sheet.
Freshman and senior center back Jack Maher and Jordan Kleyn manned the center of the back line for the entirety of the match, and Caulfield said their partnership is only going to grow stronger as time passes.
“We played a fantastic team, and it wasn’t so my organization as it was Jack and Kleyn,” Caulfield said. “Jack’s got senior minutes under his belt, and Kleyn did a fantastic job — a guy who can give us a solid 90 minutes. I think it was mainly those guys who made everyone better.”

He got lost in the pile in 2016.
Simon Waever, a senior transfer from Evansville, had a list of 10-15 teams he was interested in when he came to the United States from his home country of Denmark. Indiana University was on the list, but after sending an email to the coaching staff expressing his interest, he never heard back.
Four years later, IU assistant coach Kevin Robson reached out to Waever the day after his name was put into the NCAA transfer portal.
“When we saw him come across the transfer portal, we were very interested having already played against him,” IU head coach Todd Yeagley said. “He was one of their most dynamic players, and immediately we made contact. When we had him on a visit, we were pleasantly surprised on how he would fit in.”

The Indiana men’s soccer team added 12 new players to its roster for the 2019 season — the list included 11 incoming freshmen and one transfer from Evansville.
The Hoosiers added four forwards and midfielders, three defenders and one goalkeeper to their roster. With 10 out of the 11 players from last season’s starting 11 gone, Indiana needed a good and deep recruiting class in order to make sure there isn’t a rebuilding process that needs to be started.
Although some of the newest commits won’t make an immediate impact during their time at Indiana, there are some that could be in the mix for some significant minutes in 2019 — and possibly a starting spot.
I’ve broke each player down by position and what they bring to the table for Indiana whether it be for next season or in the years to come.
Let’s dive in, starting with the lone goalkeeper coming to Bloomington.

There wasn’t another player on last season’s IU men’s soccer team that received more praise from the coaching staff than Frankie Moore — and it wasn’t because of his skills on the pitch.
Moore was selected 23rd overall in the third round of the MLS SuperDraft by the Portland Timbers, and Portland is getting one of the most dominant holding midfielders in college soccer.
The Highland Park, Illinois native has the technical ability to be a dominant box-to-box midfielder within the right system. IU Coach Todd Yeagley used him well during his time at Indiana, and the more he played, the more confident he grew.

Indiana came into Friday night looking for a big bounce-back conference win, and the Hoosiers jumped out to a significant lead to start the game. IU struggled to get going early on in games this season, and it capitalized on many of Maryland’s mistakes in the first half.
The Terrapins wouldn’t go away, though and they clutched onto an eight-point deficit going into halftime. In the second half, they used a 16-0 run to take down Indiana in an eventual 78-75 win. The Hoosiers failed to score efficiently when it mattered most, and Maryland handed them their second-straight loss.
Freshman guard Rob Phinisee played a limited role tonight in his first game back from a concussion while Devonte Green started.
Let’s get into some takeaways from tonight.
Hoosiers start fast
Indiana jumped out to a 17-4 lead within the first seven minutes of the game, and it never looked back. Junior guard Devonte Green led the charge, scoring six of the first 17 points for the Hoosiers. By the end of the first half, Green’s total ran up to 10, shooting 3-5 from the field. The company surrounding Green was giving consistent support, contrasting to recent performances.
Indiana shot 56 percent from the field as a team, and its scoring efficiency overwhelmed Maryland for the majority of the half. Although the Terrapins shrunk the Hoosier lead down to eight going into the break, Indiana ensured that its early lead would not go to waste. It was one of the most complete first-half performances as any for Indiana this season.
Romeo delivers a quietly good performance
Overshadowed by Maryland’s second-half comeback and the impressive showings of Anthony Cowan and Bruno Fernando, IU freshman guard Romeo Langford had himself another solid performance. Langford finished the game with 28 points, shooting 8-13 from the field and adding two rebounds and three assists. He hit two big buckets within the last minute to keep Indiana’s hopes of winning alive.
The freshman guard continues to impress this season, and he scored over 15 points for the fifth straight game.
Tale of two halves
Indiana had built a comfortable 35-27 lead going into halftime, but saw it evaporate during a 16-0 run by Maryland in the second half. The Hoosiers couldn’t find an answer for Anthony Cowan and Bruno Fernando, who combined for 49 points. Indiana’s bench couldn’t get anything going throughout the night, scoring just two combined points on the night. No other Hoosier scored in double digits besides Langford, and it was just an overall bad scoring night.
