This weekend, Indiana women’s volleyball head coach Steve Aird took his team to the east coast to face off against Rutgers and his former school, Maryland.
Indiana snapped a three-game losing streak Friday, defeating the Scarlet Knights 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23). It was IU’s second win in the Big Ten this season. However against the Maryland Terrapins the Hoosiers were defeated 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 26-24).
It was an all-around showcase on Friday night against the Scarlet Knights. Breana Edwards led the way with a season-high 19 kills. True freshman setter Camryn Haworth had one of the best games of her young career with 34 assists. Indiana earned their first road conference win of the season over Big Ten winless Rutgers.
Saturday night in College Park Indiana's execution and timing were off from the first ball. Maryland won the first five points of the match. The Hoosiers had no answer early for the Terrapins but battled tough in the later sets. Indiana's defense struggled, unable to slow down Maryland middle blocker Rainelle Jones who finished with 11 kills and 12 blocks.
Indiana head coach Steve Aird is 1-5 against his former team since joining the Hoosiers. Aird was the head coach of the Terps for four seasons from 2014-17 before leaving for Bloomington.
Indiana is still looking for some rhythm and consistency, something Aird hasn’t been able to find all season. The starting lineup still remains unset and the crunch time plays have not been there.
With Aird’s former team in the rearview mirror, he will be looking to get some good work in the gym before Wednesday night when IU faces off against No. 10 Nebraska in Lincoln, and No. 8 Minnesota on Sunday in Minneapolis.

Bouncing back was the theme for the young Hoosier squad this weekend. After receiving their first loss of the season Friday, they secured their fourth and fifth wins of the season Saturday.
The then-undefeated Hoosiers faced off against Western Michigan, the host school for the Discover Kalamazoo Classic, on Friday night. After dropping the first set, Indiana took set two handily. Kari Zumach sparked a 6-1 run in which a plethora of Hoosiers made big-time plays. Mady Saris scored the final two points of the set.
Set three, the young Hoosier squad jumped out to a 13-8 lead after a pair of attack errors from Western Michigan. The Broncos scored five unanswered and stormed back to steal the set 26-24.
Despite the swing in momentum, set four was all Hoosiers, tallying nine kills in the first 14 points. Haley Armstrong nailed two aces, forcing a fifth set with a 25-11 score in the fourth frame.
The Hoosiers led in nearly every statistic, topping the Broncos in kills, hitting percentage and blocks. However, it was the Broncos who came out on top in the fifth set, 15-11, giving the Hoosiers their first loss of the season.
Head coach Steve Aird congratulated Western Michigan, but focused on rallying his troops. Aird was successful in his mission, as Saturday was a different story.
Indiana smashed Purdue Fort Wayne in three short sets, while hitting above .300 on the attack. Saris paced the team with 13 kills offensively, while Kaley Rammelsberg had five rejections on the defensive end.
The Hoosiers' final match of the Discover Kalamazoo Classic was another five-setter, this time against Southeast Missouri State. The Redhawks took the first set with clinical offense, coming off a 14-12 timeout to win the set. Indiana responded nicely as the attack found its rhythm as the second frame went on. The Hoosiers once again found themselves behind the eight-ball as they dropped the third set 25-14.
Indiana hopped out to a 12-7 lead in the fourth set and never let the Redhawks respond, forcing a fifth set for a second time this weekend.
This time the Hoosiers would not falter, as Breana Edwards carried the Hoosiers past the Redhawks 15-9 to secure the victory.
"I was really proud of the team's ability to bounce back after a challenging game one against Western Michigan on Friday night," Aird said. "We had a lot of young players compete who we had to lean on to find a way to win. We have plenty to work on and, as always, I am excited to get back in the lab on Monday."
Aird also mentioned that he is still figuring out the kinks this early in the season after the loss Friday. The Hoosiers are up to 5-1 on the season and will travel to Atlanta next weekend for the Georgia Tech Classic. Mississippi State will be the Friday night bout, followed by Oklahoma and Georgia Tech on Saturday.

A trio of tallies in the win column at the Top Dawg Challenge on opening weekend provided a strong start for a youthful Indiana squad.
The Hoosiers kicked off the season against the University of Illinois at Chicago on Friday, winning their opening game in dominant fashion. After a tight first set, the Hoosiers found themselves in front for the rest of the match.
With kills from Mady Saris and Brooke Westbeld, the Hoosiers took down the Flames 25-17 in set two. A strong 11-2 run doused the UIC Flames 25-12 in the final set. Indiana head coach Steve Aird mentioned the way his players grew throughout the match.
“I thought we continued to improve as the match progressed,” Aird said. “We have a good mix of youth and experience and a long way to go, but I am proud of the effort today.”
Up next on the slate was the reigning MAC champion, Bowling Green. The Falcons and Hoosiers went five sets in a true grind-it-out win for the Cream and Crimson.
The tandem of transfers Paula Cerame and Kaley Rammelsberg showed their importance as they set the tone for the Hoosiers from the jump. Cerame led off the match with a pair of aces, and Rammelsberg smashed a pair of kills to capture the first set 25-21. The second frame was highly contested from the two sides, however Westbeld claimed five kills and a block. After a Falcon timeout, Rammelsburg and Zumach slammed three more to close out the set 25-22.
The defending MAC champion was not done, however. After being tied at 15 in set four, the Falcons grinded out a small run and took the set 25-22. The Falcons put on an offensive showcase and took advantage of a reeling Indiana squad in set four, trouncing the Hoosiers 25-12, swinging the momentum and forcing a fifth set.
Despite failing to close out the match in the previous two sets, the Hooisers dug deep and surged for the final set. Senior Kari Zumach stepped up big with a kill and a trio of blocks to help the Hoosiers hang on and win.
Coming off a stamina-draining five-setter, Indiana had in-state opponent Butler waiting on its agenda. The previous game showed, as a drained Hoosiers squad started off sluggish in the first frame, but a crucial pair of attack errors from the Bulldogs allowed the Hoosiers to steal set one 25-22.
They carried the momentum with a strong start, denying Butler's unwavering attacks for the first points of the set, and after Mady Saris notched another kill, the Hoosiers came out on top 25-18. Freshman Camryn Haworth and sophomore Morgan Geddes manufactured a quartet of points to keep Indiana alive in set three. Geddes finished the Bulldogs off with a defining kill to seize the third win of the season for the Hoosiers.
Aird said he respected the “perseverance and grit [of the team] after going five sets with Bowling Green the match prior.” Endurance will be a key aspect for this young squad, especially against a loaded Big Ten they will face later this season. Indiana will head north to Kalamazoo, Michigan, next weekend for the Discover Kalamazoo Classic to face host school Western Michigan, along with Purdue Fort Wayne and Southeast Missouri State.
