It was a cloudy Sunday afternoon at Deborah Tobias Field where the No. 12 Indiana Hoosiers took on the Ohio Bobcats.
It was the first game back for the Hoosiers as they had a very successful road trip getting wins against Michigan State and Ohio State. The Hoosiers kept that win streak going with a 5-0 win over Ohio.
The Bobcats’ attack provided pressure from the start, as they earned a penalty corner less than a minute into the game. The penalty corner resulted in the first of many Sadie Canelli saves for IU. Immediately after this save the Hoosiers stormed right down the field and Molly Stutte tallied her eighth goal of the season and gave the Hoosiers the first-quarter lead.
The Bobcats kept the pressure on the Hoosiers as they had multiple scoring opportunities. Indiana got an amazing chance where Charlotte Glasper put the shot just wide, the Hoosiers kept momentum and got another great shot stopped by Ohio’s goalkeeper Molly Schreiner. At the end of the first quarter Ohio broke through the Indiana defense but just narrowly missed the goal.
The Bobcats started the second quarter the exact same way, testing the Indiana defense. The defense held strong, thwarting a second penalty corner for the Bobcats. This attack did not affect the Hoosiers as they had some great chances feeding off of the Bobcat mistakes. The rest of the second quarter was filled with chances on both sides of the ball. With just two seconds remaining till the halftime whistle, Theresa Ricci, assisted by Charlotte Glasper, put the Hoosiers up 2-0 going into the locker room.
The second half started hot as the Hoosiers came out playing very aggressive. They led multiple attacks, getting stopped by Schreiner. Celia Arroyo Cabezudo got the third Hoosier goal, getting assisted by Inés Garcia Prado. That was not the first time we would see that happen, as eight minutes later the pair of Spaniards did it again, extending the lead to 4-0. The Hoosiers were now dominating as the Ohio side was getting worn out.
The Bobcats were able to put a couple more shots on goal, foiled by Canelli. The Hoosiers added one more goal to the scoreboard, scored by Charlotte Glasper, putting the Hoosiers up 5-0 with under five minutes left in the game. In the last 30 seconds of the game the Bobcats got a penalty corner, hoping to spoil Canelli’s shutout. They were unable to do so as Canelli got an unbelievable double save as the clock ran out.
The Hoosiers’ win streak now stands at four games. Indiana head coach Kayla Bashore praised the team, as they now go on to face some challenging opponents in the coming games. The Hoosiers play No. 1 Northwestern at 3 p.m. Friday in Bloomington.
“I just think we're playing really good hockey,” Bashore said. “The environment is at the intensity we need it to be, to be successful these games.”
