‘Truly something special’: Record-breaking crowd welcomes men’s soccer newcomers

Indiana defeated Notre Dame in front of the largest opening-night crowd in program history

Indiana men’s soccer made its home debut for the 2026 season Thursday against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the 3-1 Hoosier victory was an unforgettable first taste for the handful of new Hoosiers that offered a win inside and outside of the white lines.

The crowd of 7,078 was the third-largest soccer attendance in Bill Armstrong Stadium history and biggest ever for opening day. Indiana’s record-setting crowd gave the nine newest Hoosiers their first taste of what makes this program so unique.

“It was unreal,” senior forward Oliver Moller-Jensen said postgame. “This was by far, the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of. Being here and playing in front of this atmosphere is truly something special.”

The FAU transfer had a Hoosier debut to remember, scoring two goals and assisting on Indiana’s other goal.

Moller-Jensen added postgame that coming to play for Indiana has “definitely exceeded my expectation.” While Moller-Jensen’s premiere performance as a Hoosier made headlines, the night meant more than goal scoring and defensive stops. The steady rainfall in the middle of the match didn’t stop fans from cheering on the crimson and cream, a reminder that the support doesn’t stop long after the final whistle blows.

“The environment was amazing,” Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley said. “The students in particular can make this thing, you know, and our transfers were in shock in a good way. That was the win tonight outside of the white lines.”

For the newcomers, Thursday's record-breaking home opener did more than offer a glimpse of what a soccer school feels like. It introduced the eclectic cultures and traditions that come with slipping on an Indiana jersey. As for Moller-Jensen, the atmosphere was only a part of what made his season debut as a Hoosier so special. The standard of the elite program was just as essential.

“Obviously coming to Indiana, they have such high standards and expectations, for the season and individually as players,” he said. “It’s an environment that I want to put myself in to set myself up for life after college.”

With a warm welcome from soccer fans all across the state, Indiana men’s soccer looks to continue its quest for their ninth national championship all season long. The Hoosiers will be back in action at Bill Armstrong Stadium this Sunday at 8 p.m. against the University of Evansville Purple Aces.
