Hot starts and rising stars: MLB’s 2026 season is taking shape

While some teams aren't living up to their potential, others are already standing out as contenders

The 2026 Major League Baseball season has officially kicked off and some of these team and player performances have shown early who is prepared to stand out for the rest of the season.

The Milwaukee Brewers have really stood out overall and are dominating the NL Central. They are starting off 7-2 with a +28 run differential. Their key players are familiar faces to those who have kept up with this team. These include Christian Yelich, Garrett Mitchell, Brice Turang and William Contreras.

With no surprise, the 2024 World Series finalist teams have also started off strong both also going 7-2 to start the season. The Yankees are adding onto that with a +26 run differential and the Dodgers right behind with a +20 run differential.

Although the hope for many is that the Dodgers will have a bad season, they are starting on track to fight for a three-peat. With signing Kyle Tucker in the offseason, the team continues to stack up their lineup.

One team that has not stood up to their full potential is the San Diego Padres. The starting lineup for the team is very well rounded even after trading away Rafael Devers, one of their key players. However, the team has not been able to make all its working parts (offense, starting pitching, and the bullpen) work together to produce the outcome that it should.

Several individual stars have also started to make their mark so far this season. Power hitters like Kyle Schwarber and Cal Raleigh set the tone last season in terms of home runs. This season Chase DeLauter and Shea Langeliers have started early with home run production both at five so far.

A couple players that have stood out stats wise include Houston’s Yordan Alvarez with a .375 batting average and 1.397 OPS and the Dodgers' Andy Pages with a .474 average and 1.289 OPS.

One of the biggest breakout stories to look for is Konnor Griffin of the Pirates. At 19 years old he made headlines by recording an RBI double in his first MLB at bat. He dominated the minor leagues with a .333 average, 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases. His rise to the minors is definitely one to keep an eye out for.

Overall, the 2026 season is off to a strong start with unexpected performances by both teams and individuals. Although still early in the season, standout athletes are showing competition and record chasing performances.
