COLUMN: The new generation of the NHL has already arrived

Young players are transforming the way hockey is played

The NHL is not waiting for the future of the league to arrive. Across the league, we have seen a new generation of NHL stars transform the way hockey is played. These stars have proved that speed and creativity define success in today’s game. They have also helped grow the game to its fullest potential, with more fans turning on the games to watch these fun young talents.

The NHL on ABC and ESPN ratings have gone up 40% this year compared to last year's ratings, according to ESPN. These players have sparked fans to turn on the TV and watch these young stars chase their dreams. These young players have also brought a ton of media coverage to their respective teams. The younger fans feel a great connection to this new generation of young superstars.

Not too long ago, NHL teams were built on veteran experience and physicality. Teenagers were not expected to jump right into the NHL. It was rare to see a teenager play minor league hockey. The modern-day NHL is faster than ever, and younger players are not easing their way into the league. They are taking it over.

We have seen this new group of young offensive players who have helped transform the game with their speed and exciting play. That includes Macklin Celebrini, who was the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft for the San Jose Sharks. Celebrini has done wonders for the game, showing everyone that the future of the NHL is in good hands going forward. He will be the face of this game for years to come, and he already ranks in the top five in points in the NHL. Celebrini is only 19 years old and has already shown signs of being a future superstar in this league for years to come.

Connor Bedard is another example of a young player who has positively changed the NHL. His highlight reel goals and his fast level of play have brought life back to a Chicago Blackhawks organization that was missing a spark. Bedard puts on a show every single time he hits the ice. He plays with such swagger and electricity that he has inspired the next generation of young hockey players.

With the new generation coming in, we also see a new play style for NHL defensemen.

Defensemen used to be big, strong, and physical guys whose main job was to protect the net. In today’s game, we see more offensive defensemen who skate like they are forwards. In hockey, the future doesn’t show up at once but rather in the form of one player whose playing style is different from that of the generations before him. We see this new, quick play style redefining the sport and their position.

Matthew Schaefer is a perfect example of this. Schaefer has burst onto the scene after being selected as the first overall pick in last summer's draft. His game is built on his speed and his amazing decision-making. Schaefer has brought new energy to the New York Islanders with his play style. He is only 18 years old, and the future is so bright for him.

In the more recent years, we have seen other young defensemen dominate the games as well, including the Montreal Canadiens’ Lane Hutson, who won the Calder Trophy last season. Hutson, like Schaefer, plays an exciting brand of hockey. He plays a fast game and is an elite playmaker. Hutson has done an amazing job leading this Montreal defense. He is 22 years old and has already proven that he will be a Norris Trophy contender for years to come.

Today, defensemen are more playmakers who skate like forwards and start offensive breakouts from the defensive zone. Speed and puck movement have been a major part of this new era of the NHL. Offensive play for defenders has become just as valuable as their defensive play. When you watch Schaefer and Hutson play, you can see them play with such speed and determination to lead their team to success. Both of their games emphasize mobility and transition hockey. These traits are what make an elite NHL defenseman in today’s game.

Teams are building their identity more on these young talents rather than aging vets. GMs look for more young players whose games are modeled on playing fast. Transition hockey and quick puck movement have been the name of the game the last couple of seasons. Fans are falling in love with these new young talents who have transformed the game. This new generation in the NHL is not just changing who succeeds in this league. They are changing what success looks like. Speed is what matters most in today’s game, and these new players are showing that in every game they play.
