New year, same team: Indiana brings home another victory to start 2024

The men remained undefeated and the women earned a dramatic win

New year, new me? More like new year, same team.

Starting off their new year strong, the Indiana Hoosiers took home another victory against longtime rival Michigan Wolverines. On Friday at the Donald B. Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the men won with a score of 182-118 while the women finished with a 152-148 victory.

On the diving side, 10 Hoosiers took on 11 Wolverines in a heated battle. Indiana got a standout performance from Carson Tyler, whose score of 466.36 on the 3-meter landed him a new personal best and a clean sweep of the springboard competition. After recently qualifying for Team USA this past December, Tyler proved himself Olympic worthy Friday.

Alongside Tyler were Dash Glasberg and Maxwell Weinrich, who joined Tyler in the top three for the men’s 3-meter platform. On the women’s team, Anne Fowler, Ella Roselli and Skyler Lui finished in the top three for the 1-meter competition. Fowler and Lui went on to place in the top two for the 3-meter competition.

The IU and Michigan women were neck and neck, yet IU pulled through with the victory. Friday’s IU win marks the women’s second consecutive victory against Michigan, after a nearly seven-year losing streak during their 2014-2021 seasons.

As the men’s team continued its undefeated season, Brendan Burns won all three of his sets — both backstroke events and the 200 butterfly. Burns’ relay team with Finn Brooks, Tomer Frankel and Mikkel Lee finished with a time of 1:25.86. The Hoosiers also finished first and second during the men’s 100 freestyle, as Lee finished first with Rafael Miroslaw close behind. On top of this, Jassen Yep and Brearna Crawford swept the breaststroke competition.

The Hoosiers are surely “keeping the standard a standard,” as head coach Ray Looze says, as their victory will lead them into their next meet on Jan. 27 against the Purdue Boilermakers in Bloomington.
